Basher (1948, Waset, Iraq) is a self-taught artist. He attended secondary school in Iraq where he received his first painting lessons. In 1979 the situation in his country and his interest in art drove him to Europe, to the city of Florence, where he followed workshops at the Scuola di ilNudo, (The School for the Nude) where he learned to paint the human figure. During this time Basher was able to support himself through portraiture. In Florence he met the Italian painter Doni. For five years Basher trained at Doni's studio, where he painted many works for his master. Basher began to develop his own imagery and visual language in which light and references to old masters were combined with spatial backgrounds. Basher later met his old school friend Saad Ali, who persuaded him to exhibit his work in the Netherlands. After several successful exhibitions, a catalogue was created of Basher's work helping him to further establish his name in Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.
