José van Kleef (1956, Utrecht) mainly works with human, animal and natural subjects and tries to express the longing for a world that no longer exists, a resistance against hectic modern life. Van Kleef paints a world that she would like to see around her. She does not execute a pre-fixed plan, but creates that world during the painting process. Each painting begins with an abstract colour composition; she starts to wipe with brush and knife on the panel without a plan. Thus the colour is the beginning of everything and very important for Van Kleef. From the sturdy painted panel, animals, mythical creatures and archetypical figures slowly grow into existence.VanKleef exhibited at Gallery De Roos van Tudor, Gallery Art Works, and Gallery De Witte Arend. Her work has also been shown at Art Twente, Haf The Hague, Haf Utrecht, KAR Rotterdam and KunstRai Amsterdam.
